How To Choose Tires

Jan 20, 2020

1. Tire aspect ratio

Aspect ratio refers to the percentage of the tire's cross-sectional height to its maximum width. Tires with high aspect ratios have long sidewalls and strong cushioning capacity, and are relatively comfortable, but they have a poor feel on the road and weak lateral resistance during cornering. Conversely, tires with low aspect ratios and large inner diameters, Due to the short sidewall and wide tread, the ground contact area is large, and the tires can withstand large pressures. They are very sensitive to the road surface, have strong lateral resistance when turning, and have strong vehicle handling.

2. Tire pattern

In addition to the beauty of the tire pattern, it also directly affects the handling of the car, whether there is noise, drainage performance, wear resistance, etc. The most common tire patterns include horizontal groove patterns, straight groove patterns, straight transverse groove patterns, block patterns and asymmetric patterns. Among them, the horizontal groove pattern has good friction and the straight groove pattern has low driving resistance, which is suitable for outdoor driving requirements of SUV. The block pattern is suitable for mud or snow, while the asymmetric pattern has better drainage.

3. Tire width

The tire width is determined by the width of the wheel hub, and the width of the tread also determines the grip performance of the tire. Theoretically, the larger the contact area between the tread width and the ground, the greater the grip of the tire and the handling performance. The better. However, due to the increased rolling resistance of wide tires, fuel consumption will also increase. Therefore, in the classification of tires, models that pursue performance will choose wider tires, but if it is a family economy car, then its tread will not be very wide.

4. Tire performance index

Car tires must have three signs of tire wear, traction and heat generation, referred to as "three Ts". Abrasion index refers to the indicator of the tire tread wear performance and service life. The higher the value, the more wear-resistant the tire; the tire traction index, which measures the adhesion performance of the tire to the ground, is divided into four levels: AA, A, B, and C , AA level is the highest; heat generation index refers to the tire’s resistance to heat generation and is related to the tire’s high-speed performance. It is divided into three levels: A, B, and C, and A is the best.

5. Choose tire brand

The most direct and convenient way to buy tires daily is to start with tire brands, just like choosing a car. Better brands include Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, etc. But there is no need to blindly pursue high-end brands, after all, the ones that are suitable are the best. Different tires are suitable for different models, different road conditions, and different needs. The tires in each brand are also divided into different grades and series. Generally high-end focuses on sportiness and quietness, while low-end models focus on anti-wearing
